Summary
The western parts of the fjelds presented themselves in a state of full winter, despite the somewhat late date, and it was not until I reached Gruvsmällen on the second day that the contrast to the lower Vålådalen area became fully apparent – and what a contrast it was. From full winter to full spring more or less just by descending a slope! Fascinating.
Now, I had no particular problems negotiating the way down from Vålåvalen, even though it took both some circumventory action and considerable expenditure of perspiration in the glaring sun – and it would have been much more difficult just a day or two later. All things considered, the last stage was reminiscent of my previous late-spring tour to Helags, but this time it was just a single day, not the whole trip. And, just as that time – among others – the feeling of nature's coming alive was strong, and all was better for it.
Another thing about doing a tour this late in winter is, as mentioned, the forceful return of the light, adding to the sense of rebirth. I had not brought an artificial light source this time and never missed it. If it's anything in particular that really defined this tour, it is the sun, and I spent long periods under its face just enjoying the quiet of the wild (and acquiring quite the tan).
Another consequence of the lateness and (in places) scant snow cover was, also as expected, that the Easter crowds were lessened compared to, for example, the year before – and my starting already on Thursday again strengthened the effect. Still, there were quite a few people out and about, lured by the fair weather, but it rather felt sociable than crowded.
As for the route chosen, I would have preferred doing it in the opposite direction this time for variety, but, again, the local transportation options leave quite a bit to be desired nowadays. I therefore elected to eschew the marked trails for the most part, especially during the first two days, seeking side paths (with or without actual paths) to maintain freshness. I am most satisfied with the northerly detour between Gåsen and Vålåvalen – something I've done before, in the other direction – and Gruvsmällen is highly recommended as an easy ascension goal!
Gåsen always has a high chance of being included in a tour like this, both due to its high and therefore secure location snow-wise and because it remains a winter favorite of mine – and it did not disappoint this time either (including the "traditional" summit climb). I also hold Vålåvalen higher than Stensdalen, even with the former's lack of sauna, and it was nice seeing it again in winter.
All right, then! Apart from a somewhat shaky start this tour was a great success, and I am very happy that I managed to do it – which was really in the nick of time.
