Introduction

Just like last year I had a mind to do an Easter tour here in Jämtland, even though the holiday was a full three weeks later this time around, which, depending on preceding conditions, might make ski travel difficult. The last couple of weeks leading up to Easter were very fine, however, with warm days and cold nights, so in the end things looked favorable.

Also in keeping with last year I could get Maundy Thursday off, and after consulting both the weather forecasts and the (still deplorably deficient) public transport timetables, I resolved to make the tour a near-clone of the previous one: Storulvån, Gåsen and Vålådalen were to be the anchor points, in that order, but rather than Stensdalen I would now aim for Vålåvalen on the second day. Another difference was that due to the later date and warmer temperatures my attire and pack would be lighter – and, speaking of which, not to mention that the whole thing would see a good deal more natural light.

My packing list was as follows:

Add to that half a liter of warm water in the thermos, and half of liter of cold water in a flask carried in one of the jacket's chest pockets.

I had still not acquired any new backcountry skis, so I was to use the old ones with the damaged steel edge, but having done so just recently in the woods of home I judged that they were likely to hold together for this little adventure as well. We shall see how long this state of affairs can last...

Here, then, is the account of what transpired during the subsequent three days. Each section has a header consisting of a short overview of the stage in question, complete with a map showing the route travelled. A ring marks the starting point, a square the lunch break location, and a star the destination. Vertical distances have been calculated from the map and have an accuracy of 10 m. All cottage breakfasts consisted of oatmeal porridge, tea and a sandwich, and all lunches of two cups of instant soup and a sandwich.
